William Shamstein, 34, of the Bronx was known by friends and family as a hardcore comic book fan and cosplay dresser. His girlfriend, Sarah Rogan was also a comic book fan and cosplay model, as both attended comic con every year since 2009 dressed in costumes ranging from Marvel and DC characters to Stars Wars and Japanese Anime characters. According to reports, Rogan arrived at Shamstein’s apartment at approximately 1:45 P.M. when she discovered her boyfriend, unresponsive in his bedroom. Rogan immediately called 911 while attempting to resuscitate her boyfriend.
According to Sarah Rogan, “After I found my boyfriend slumped over in his gamer chair, I ran over to him to see if he was okay. When he did not respond to me, I checked to see if he was sleeping and that is when I saw that he was not breathing. I called 911 and I tried to give him CPR until the ambulance arrived. After a few attempts, I noticed an empty bottle of Percocets on the floor next to him. I then saw an undelivered text message on his iPhone next to him that read:
FML!!! I waited in queue since 12 and now the 3 and 4 day passes are sold out! I live for Comic Con! I wasted my time waiting for nothing. I’m done!
When I read the text fully, which he was going to send to me, that is when I found out he committed suicide.”
According to authorities, when the EMS and police arrived at the scene, Shamstein was pronounced dead. Officer Rodriguez retrieved the iPhone containing the suicide message which went into further detail regarding how frustrated Shamstein was with waiting in queue and missing his opportunity to get tickets.
Reportedly, another part of the iPhone message read, “We go to comic con every year… how is it that I was waiting in line for an hour and some change and miss out on tickets but I see them on eBay already!!!! WTF!!!! I can’t go on with life knowing I’ve missed out on this years comic con!!! Sorry Sarah!!!”
Authorities have not released the full contents of the unsent text messages but has indicated that Shamstein expressed his deep concerns about seeing Stan Lee at comic con as this is suppose to the last year he is attending Comic Con. Sarah Rogan was questioned at the scene and authorities determined that no foul play was involved.
